So, What Is Music Therapy?
At Look Who’s Talking, we believe in the power of connection—and sometimes, the best way to connect is through music.
“Music therapy is the intentional and therapeutic use of music by Registered Music Therapists (RMTs), to support people in improving their health, functioning, and well-being.”
(Australian Music Therapy Association)
Our Registered Music Therapists (RMTs) are skilled musicians and highly trained allied health professionals who understand how music can impact behaviour, cognition, emotions, and overall wellbeing. With a strong foundation in research and clinical practice, RMTs support individuals of all ages—from newborns in the NICU to older adults in aged care. You’ll find music therapists working across healthcare, education, community programs, and private practice. Want to learn more? Head over to the Australian Music Therapy Association.
How Can Music Therapy Help Me?
At Look Who’s Talking, our Music Therapists offer services at both our Birkdale and Bulimba clinics, as well as out in the community.
We support goals in a variety of areas, including:
-
Communication and speech-language development
-
Physical development and rehabilitation
-
Emotional and sensory regulation
-
Cognitive and executive functioning
-
Social communication skills and mental health
We use music as a therapeutic tool to connect, regulate, motivate, and empower. And here’s the best part: you don’t need to be musical to join in! Our primary goal is using evidence based practice to build your capacity to use music in everyday life in ways that are fun, meaningful, and aligned with your goals. Finding Your Rhythm: Your Music Therapy Journey
Every journey starts with getting to know you and ours begins with a pre-assessment zoom call. This chat gives us a chance to understand your interests, musical preferences, current challenges, and what you’d love to gain from music therapy. We’ll discuss your background, music preferences/interests, primary concerns, or goal areas you may have, and our Look Who’s Talking policies and procedures.
The next step is when we actually get to meet for the first time, our initial assessment session. Your RMT will facilitate a comprehensive session and provide a summary report outlining observations and recommendations.
Not sure if Music Therapy may work for you and your family? Already a client with us? We offer ‘Intro to Music Therapy’ sessions where one of our RMT’s will pop in during your existing Speech or OT session—just to see if music therapy might be a great fit and to answer any questions you might have!
